Recommendation for activities during a sunny week
Hello from Sunny Holland,
Living in Maastricht, a university town, offers a peaceful atmosphere and a refreshing change of pace. The entire week has been sunny, adding an extra touch of joy to my days. Below, I share some suggestions on how you can spend your time and beat boredom in this charming city.
1. Picnics: A Must-Do Activity
Picnicking is a beloved activity here, and it’s easy to see why. With numerous parks and expansive green spaces, it’s a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors. I've always dreamed of hosting a feast with friends in a peaceful setting, which isn’t possible in my noisy hometown. During your internship, take the chance to gather a group, arrange some delicious food, and share cultural experiences in one of these beautiful spots.
2. Outdoor Pilates
Beyond running or hitting the gym, why not try an outdoor Pilates session? It’s a fantastic way to have fun and find motivation, both from the energetic trainers and fellow participants. Pilates isn’t easy, but it’s worth trying. I recommend sessions with Soha Youssef (@sohagoesfit), a specialist in Pilates. For just €10 per session, held weekly on Thursdays or Fridays, depending on the weather, you can make a small yet impactful change. The sessions attract onlookers and participants alike, creating a lively and enthusiastic atmosphere.
3. Mount Sint Pietersberg: A Quick Escape
Just a short distance from the city center, you can visit the Dutch province of Limburg and enjoy nature at Mount Sint Pietersberg. This area offers tranquility and a chance to unwind. Long walks, exploring caves, admiring views from lookout points, and visiting natural reservoirs are just some of the activities you can enjoy. Be prepared for a fair number of steps, but reaching the river offers a moment of peace and disconnection.
4. Festivals: Experience Local Culture
Maastricht hosts a variety of festivals, such as the Food Truck Festival, the Wine Festival, the Bierfestival, and many more. Last week, we attended the Bierfestival. Upon entry, you purchase tokens and a deposit for a glass (€4, refundable at the end). It’s a fantastic opportunity to try different beers, from strong brews to flavored ones. The Pina Colada beer was a highlight for us, and we stuck with it till the end.
5. Café Modern: A Unique 1960s Experience
Café Modern in Teuven, Belgium, offers a unique ambiance that takes you back to the 1960s. It’s about a 40-minute drive from Maastricht by car, and public transport options are available too. This café provides a completely different atmosphere, peaceful during the week but crowded on weekends due to its charming setting. Enjoy light music, bars, numerous portraits of significant figures from that era, a bit of rock and roll, and a huge music section where you can play a song for €1 and surprise everyone with unexpected tunes, making you the center of attention for a moment.
6. Night Landscape: Riverside Promenades
For a free and delightful experience, stroll along the riverside promenades at night. You’ll encounter people playing music on speakers, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere. Whether you join in or simply enjoy the view of boats on the Maas River, this is a fantastic way to spend your evening. The sight of people partying on boats, accompanied by music,
adds another layer of enjoyment to your riverside walk.
Embrace these activities during your stay in Maastricht to fully experience the city's charm and vibrant culture.
